Located in east Taiwan, Taroko Gorge was created by the collision between the Philippine Oceanic Plate and the Eurasian Continental Plate. The collision was so strong that altitude rises from sea level to over 3,000 within 30 KM in linear distance. Liwu river cutting the range like a knife due to the altitude variation. When you look upward at the bottom of the gorge, you will be absolutely astonished by the skyrocketing marble cliff, which is 1,000 meters above you.

Taroko National Park is founded to preserve the natural resource, and cultural heritage in the gorge. There are plenty of traveling resource in the park. Swallow Grotto( Yanzikou) , Jiuqudong (Tunnel of Nine Turns) Trail, Tianxiang are popular scenic spots. You can find more information about these scenic spots from the official page.

Among these trails Zhuilu Old Road is the most breathtaking one. The west side entrance bridge lies on the Liwu river at Swallow Grotto.Japanese built Zhuilu Old Road in 1914 because of war. The length of Zhuilu Old Road is about 10 KM, starting from Cihmu Bridge( west side) and ending at Swallow Grotto (east side). Part of Zhuilu Old Road was paved along the cut cliff which is 500 meters above the Liwu river. Unfortunately, west side was closed due to landslide. Visitors can only enter the road from Swallow Grotto and must return at 5.6KM Zhuilu outPost. It may about 6 hours to finish and return to Swallow Grotto.

entry and Ecological Protection Area Entry Permit are required before entring. Both can be applied on-line in the webpage of National Policy Agency and National Taroko Pak . But if you are a foreigner, you can only register by filling the application form or applying on-line by Taiwanese for you.
Hualien City, 25 KM of Taroko Gorge, is the biggest city in east Taiwan. Hualien Railway Station is the transportation center of east Taiwan as well.Bus terminal is in front of the railway station. You can also rent a car or motorcycle there. You can also get the free consulting service from Travel Service Center, which is situated at the right hand side of Hualien Railway Station.
Taiwan Tourist Shuttle service is the best choose if you travel by public transportation. The interval of Taroko Tourist Shuttle is about one hour in the weekday, and half an hour in the weekend. The fare for one way ticket, from Hualien Railway Station to Tianxiang, is NTD 172, and one day ticket is NTD 250.

There are lots of guest house in Hualien. If you have budget constrain, you can choose the following hostel. Amigos Hostel is 5 minutes from Hualien Railway Station. Monkey Surfing Backpackers Hostel is located in the city center. Liwu Inn International YH is at the entrance of Taroko Gorge.
